The First Baptist Church in America
Meeting House Erected 1775
Providence, Rhode Island
The First Baptist Church was founded by Roger Williams
after he was exiled from Massachusetts Bay Colony.
All descendants of Valentine Wightman and Susannah Holmes are also
descendants of Roger Williams. (Roger Williams was the great-grandfather
of Susannah Holmes, who became the wife of Rev. Valentine Wightman.)
It is apparent that the Wightman family was close to the Williams family,
even back in England, as Roger's sister, Catherine, was married to
Ralph Wightman.
George Wightman (the Immigrant) came directly from England to Providence,
and associated with Roger Williams.
This historic church has been rebuilt. It stands near the
center of Providence, Rhode Island, and is attended by descendants
of the Wightman and Williams families.
