WYKEN HALL, HINCKLEY, CO. LEICESTER.

The illustration of this mansion, now a farm-house, is taken from an engraving in Nicholl's History. The Manor of Wyken was acquired by William Wightman after the dissolution of the monasteries.  From the ancient records it would appear that a substantial portion, if not the whole, was tenanted for some time before the purchase, by William Wightman and his ancestors.  It is recorded that on 12th May, 1543, a Licence was granted to Edward Fenes, Lord Clynton and Saye, and Robert Tyrwhitt, to alienate 2 messuages and lands in Wyken, Co., Leicester, in the tenures of Wyghtman and Robert Byrehley to the said William and the heirs of his body.  Many extracts of wills of the members of the family living at Wyken, and also Visitation Records will be found in other chapters.  It is not shewn when this property went out of the family, but this appears to have been towards the end of the seventeenth century.

The historic and beautiful Wyken Hall still stands in the hamlet of Wyken, on the outskirts of Hinckley and near the Wightman town of origin, Leicester.   It is well kept and includes 400 acres of wheat and rape seed, along with a diversity of farm animals.
Ronald & Ilse Wightman will be visiting the area in June of this year. The trip will include time spent at Lichfield, where Edward was burned at the stake, visits to ancient churches at Hinckley (including a visit with the Vicar at St. Mary's church at Hinckley), the church at Burbage, Burton-on-Trent, and Leicester.

A full report of the trip and findings will be in the next newsletter.
